Part two 5/2/2021
“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous” Romans 5:19. NKJV.
“Although He was a Son, (Son of God) yet He learned obedience by the things He suffered” Hebrews 5:8. Jesus was perfected, not in a moral sense since He always possessed moral perfection. But in His nature as the (Son of Man) the author of Hebrews emphasizes the genuine humanity of Jesus.
The path that He trod as the suffering Redeemer was fitting, for thereby He was made perfect. He became perfect or complete as an all-sufficient Savior Hebrews 2:10.
What is obedience? The Bible’s definition of obedience in the New Testament is given in the second part of 2 Corinthians 10:5. “Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. Strong’s # 5218 is from two Greek words “hupo”, meaning “under” and “akoun” “to hear”.
Hoop-ak-oh-ay means attentive hearing, to listen with compliant submission, agree to God’s commands, especially after thoughtful consideration. Obey and do it. To not obey is to sin.
In last week’s message Samuel spells out (I kings 15:22) what obedience and sacrifices mean to us. We read about the sad end to King Saul’s rein as king over Israel. Samuel said, “Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Saul’s motives are shown to be rebellion and stubbornness or standing in opposition to God’s commands.
Behold, to obey is better than to sacrifice…
So, what is the meaning of sacrifice in our text? 1 Samuel 15:22. “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice. Faith in God’s Word that produces obedience to God’s will delights the Lord. Burnt offerings and sacrifices may indicate mere external religionism or even hypocrisy, but obedience to God springs out of the heart.
There is a direct link here given by Hosea the prophet. Hosea says in 6:6: “For I desire mercy (here meaning faithfulness or loyalty) and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.” Mercy (Hebrew hesed) is a loyal covenant love extended to others because it has been experienced in one’s own relationship with God.
Two Covenants are to be understood here. In the Old Testament the word “Knowledge” Strong’s #1847 (Dah-aht) is defined as knowing, understanding, intelligence, wisdom, discernment, skill (dah-aht) comes from the verb yada; “to know.” Hosea 4:6 says, lack of knowledge destroys God’s people. “By His knowledge, MY righteous Servant (Jesus) shall justify many” can be taken to mean that knowledge of Him (Jesus) that is knowing Him justifies them or that He uses His knowledge and skills to obtain their justification that is, He: by His priestly intercession, knows how to justify believers.
Now, in regard to the Holy Spirit His impartation only came upon kings, priests, and prophets to guide the people; then He would leave, the Holy Spirit was not resident in the Old Covenant believers.
So, in context the Old Covenant believers only had head knowledge, which is incomplete, because the Holy Spirit was not in residence. One of Our Lord Holy Spirit’s names is Parakletos. Our helper, or comforter, one called ‘Alongside.” He leads and guides while imparting His wisdom, understanding, help in so many ways. Another name for Holy Spirit is “Spirit of Truth.”
Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth and the truth (the truth is a person the Holy Spirit) shall make (speaks of a process) you free.” John 8:31,32. Let’s compare these two definitions for clarity.
Three types of knowledge.
O.T.
Dah-aht is defined as knowing, understanding, intelligence, wisdom, discernment, skill (dah-aht) comes from the verb yada; “to know, only as man limited. With out the influence of the Holy Spirit.
N.T.
Know (ginosko) Strong’s # 1097. To perceive, understand, recognize, gain knowledge, realize, come to know. Ginosko is the knowledge that has an inception, a progress, and an attainment. It is the recognition of truth by personal experience of the person of the Holy Spirit.
Knowledge (epignosis) Strong’s # 1922. Meaning precise and correct knowledge. It expresses a more thorough participation on the part of the knower, with the object of knowledge; a knowledge that has a powerful influence on the knower. Under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
I.E. “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgement and discernment. Philippians 1”9.
Now for part two of the process. “So then faith (trust) comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17. We are limited to our five senses, but in our hearing, we understand because the H.S. is in the Word and bears witness to our B.A. spirit, so faith (trust) comes so that we can submit to His will in obedience.
“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5.
Obedience (hupakoe) Strong’s # 5218. From hupo, “under,” and akouo, “to hear.” The word means attentive hearing, to listen with compliant submission, assent, and agreement. It is used for obedience in general, for obedience to God’s commands, and for Christ’s obedience.
Out of all of these, the highest significance of the usage of the word obedience in the Bible is between the relation of man to God. The reason for this is that obedience is the supreme and ultimate test of faith in God and reverence for him.
